Tech Errors

You don’t have sufficient access privileges to update your config file

Description

You launch the Urban Engine and see the following error:

configerror

This is occurring due to insufficient windows file permissions on your Urban Circus Data folder.  The Urban Engine requires full read/write permissions to the Urban Circus data folder which stores configuration files, model data, libaries, saves, etc.

UE 2.10 and earlier default to c:\programdata\urban circus for this location.  On some windows configurations, application access to this folder is restricted.  UE 2.11 and newer default to C:\Users\Public\Documents\Urban Circus which do not require any special permissions.

Resolution

There are several ways to resolve this issue.

Option 1 – Run the Urban Engine as administrator

Right click on the Urban Engine Icon and click Run As Administrator

runasadmin

This should enable the Urban Engine to access the Urban Circus Data folder with full permissions.

Option 2 -Modify the Urban Circus data folder permissions

Open the Urban Circus data folder by clicking Start->Programs->Urban Circus 64->UC Data

This will open the Urban Circus data folder in Windows Explorer.

Right click on an empty section of the Windows Explorer screen and click properties.

properties

Click the security tab and navigate to the Users entry

security

Click edit, select Users again and ensure their permissions are set to Full Control.

fullcontrol

Click OK, then Click OK again.  All regular users show now have full access to the Urban Circus Data folder

Option 3 – Relocate Urban Circus Data to a folder with full control

First, open the Urban Circus data folder by clicking Start->Programs->Urban Circus 64->UC Data.  Leave this window open as we will need it later.

Download the latest Urban Engine installer from https://portal.u-c.com.au/downloads/

Follow the installation instructions here, except when prompted for the Application Data directory and User Data Directory, use a folder with no permissions restrictions.  We recommend C:\Users\Public\Documents\Urban Circus

Start the Urban Engine, this will create all necessary folders at the new location.  Close the Urban Engine before opening any projects.

Open the new Urban Circus data folder by clicking Start->Programs->Urban Circus 64->UC Data.  You should now have two folders open – old and new.

Migrate your old data from the old location by copying all of its folders (eg. Projects, Saves, Libraries) to the new location.

Start the Urban Engine again and verify that your projects and saves are now available.
