Cloud-Streaming vs Local Data for Massive City Models – Explaining the Differences and Benefits

Storing Base Models on your local machine, such as a laptop or desktop, is fine for smaller models and working individually. But massive models and networked users want to have access to these models from multiple locations, and want to share the models with multiple persons without the hassle of moving huge datasets around.

We have a cloud-streaming service to enable a distributed, convenient model experience.

Paged Base Model data is stored remotely, on the cloud, which can stream over the internet to a desktop application. Paged data is structured into an oct-tree format to allow high speed streaming. Data is structured into bite-sized “chunks” to allow the data to load and unload conveniently in a restricted capacity network environment.

Increased network capacity or bandwidth (internet speed, LAN speed, network card speeds etc) will clearly provide faster streaming. With the desktop App installed, the user experience is high quality and smooth, even while the data still streams and loads for a few seconds.

Cloud-streaming allows for centrally controlled data with a single point of truth for of massive, multi-terrabyte, 3D data sets.

One obvious advantage is that multiple users can access the one Base Model data set without the need to duplicate the data, carry around hard drives. When the Base Model is updated, it is updated in a single location, and no need for the overhead of duplicating across hard drives.

Another advantage is the ability to allow third parties, in other organisations or areas, to access the model in the simplest manner – just need the Application, a login and an internet connection. If users don’t have suitable graphics-enabled machines, they can even use graphics-enabled Virtual Machines.

When using the desktop Application with cloud-streaming data, Pro Mode data (from importing, camera paths, maker tools etc) stay on the local computer. This data can be shared or synchronised between computers in the normal way.

Our Main Cache feature supports faster loading on next visit to that place with cloud-streaming data. Visited locations are stored by default on your hard drive to limit any wait times for the next load of that location. The Base Cache is set to 5Gb to manage data stored and remains in place locally until deleted.

Our Offline Caching feature allows you to specify an area to ensure it is stored locally – suitable if you are going offline (eg to a meeting). Simply highlight an area using the tool and instruct the App to cache.

Streaming can be deployed on a range of cloud options – from Amazon web services, to private clouds in data centres or even hosted internally. In all instances, data is backed up and stored securely.
